The role of the H pylori in an ulcer

Almost thirty years ago, the reason why people were developing an ulcer was completely unknown. Most of the doctors and scientists thought that food that was spicy, stress and acid were the factors that were responsible for an ulcer. However, years have passed and a new discovery was made where ulcer problems were concerned. The discovery of the H pylori bacteria was a major revelation in ulcer problems. Nowadays, it is known for a fact that almost eighty percent of the gastric ulcer cases are cause by this bacteria. Furthermore, almost ninety percent of the duodenal gastric cases are also because of H pylori. The result was an improvement in the way ulcer was treated. You can now cure an ulcer through medical therapy instead of using surgery as an ulcer treatment.

The most common of all ulcer symptoms is pain. When suffering from an ulcer you will feel a burning sensation or a gnawing pain in the stomach area, just under your rib cage. This ulcer pain grows gradually. At first you will feel some mild pain to indicate an ulcer. After a few weeks or even months, the pain will increase. The pain that accompanies an ulcer is mostly found when your stomach is empty or early in the morning. The ulcer pain can last between a few minutes to over an hour. To relive you of the pain you feel when having an ulcer it is best that you take antacids. There are some other ulcer symptoms, but they are less common. One of those ulcer symptoms is nausea. Vomiting or apetite loss can also be found if suffering from an ulcer. If you have a deep ulcer, bleeding is very common.

Besides the bacteria that causes ulcer, it is also thought that if there are cases of ulcer in your family, you are more at risk of developing an ulcer as well. That is the reason why, if there is ulcer in your family history, the best thing for you is to be tested for H pylori. If you also have a history of gastric cancer, the test that may determine if you are at risk of developing an ulcer should be taken.

The biggest risk if having a gastric ulcer, besides the ulcer complications that you might have if not using proper ulcer treatment is gastric cancer.
